If the most dramatic headlines were true, we’d all be preparing for robots to take over our jobs, our lives, and, eventually, the world. But the truth is, automation and AI are doing more to improve the quality of our work than they are to replace us. Today, more companies—including LinkedIn—are focusing on human-AI interaction. LinkedIn believes that the combination of AI and human decision making achieves a better outcome than AI alone. We all know that AI is able to more efficiently handle processes that are repetitive or laborious, but AI can also help turn intuition into action at scale.
Maria Zhang examines AI and its impact on people’s jobs, quality of work, and overall business outcomes. For example, instead of having a traditional search system for combing through thousands of resumes, recruiters now have something that learns their preferences over time to determine the best candidates for an open job, which leaves more time for recruiters to interact with top candidates, adding the crucial human element back into the mix. Along that same line, it’s very important to be mindful of introducing bias when we automate these critical decision-making processes.
Maria is vice president of engineering at LinkedIn Talent Solutions (LTS) and Careers, which helps recruiters connect with quality talent and connects job-seekers with opportunity. Previously, Maria was CTO at Tinder, where she built a world-class team of engineers and scaled the app to serve a rapidly growing global user base; was vice president of engineering for Yahoo Mobile; managed teams at Microsoft, Zillow, and NetIQ; and founded Alike, a mobile local recommendation app (acquired by Yahoo). She studied computer science at Tsinghua University and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University.
